From Saturday April 8 Maniago, City of cutlery works, becomes the capital of contemporary textile art with the final celebration of the biennial international Competition of contemporary textile art Valcellina Award, 10° edition, organized by association Le Arti Tessili presented by Annamaria Poggioli, curated by Andrea Bruciati and built around the theme Connection/Connessione: that is, in a world where everything is virtually connected, to humanize communications and encourage more genuine emotional relationships, we can recur to the flexibility that belongs to the textiles’ interwoven structure and suppleness and that leads to the real exchange.

In the rooms of the ancient Palazzo d’Attimis, at 6 p.m., the exhibition’s opening of the 20 works selected among many arrived from 10 different countries (Russia, Canada, Taiwan R.O.C., Japan, Italy, Poland, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, China). The winners, who will be announced that evening (at the moment from leaks, the news are that on the podium, this time there will not be only oriental artists, as it happened these last years), have been selected by the Jury met on March 17,composed by Andrea Bruciati, art historian and art director of ArtVerona/Art Project Fair from 2013 to 2016, recently appointed director of the two monumental sites Villa d’Este and Villa Adriana in Tivoli, both UNESCO patronage, as well as curator of Valcellina Award; Sabrina Comin, in charge of TRA Treviso Art Research, Maria Morganti, artist, Renata Pompas, journalist and essayist and Lydia Predominato, fiber artist, teacher, creator and curator of fiber art exhibitions.

The exhibition’s opening, that will be open until May 28, will be enriched by spectacular performances of partner schools (Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, Academy of Haute Couture and Costume Koefia in Roma and SRISA Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence) that give the four winners of the competition, together with the Foundation Lisio in Florence, the chance of attending a free short study course in their places.

The Valcellina Award, that reaches its 20 years, is promoted and edited by the association Le Arti Tessili – who celebrates instead 30 years of life and commitments – with the contribution of Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Municipality of Maniago and Fondazione Friuli. Essential for the project’s realisation, was also supported by company Savio in Pordenone – with whom they worked together for the creation of the company calendar 2017-, the Ecomuseum Lis Aganis, Maria Luisa Sponga Fiber Artist, Dhg Shop, Conti d’Attimis Maniago, the Restaurant Hotel Antica Taverna, the bank Friulovest and various other supports, especially from the cultural associations in the area of Maniago, ever closer to the event, and the patronage and sponsorship among which the important institutions of industry and design such as SMI (Italian Fashion System) Textile Federation and Young Entrepreneurs Fashion Group, Association Design Italy FVG, Unione Industriali Pordenone Young Entrepreneurs Industry Group, Confindustria Udine and Fidapa Pordenone. Historical partners and new ones with whom Le Arti Tessili collaborates in order to make the competition a space open to communication and confrontation.

A centre-piece initiative among the many activities carried out by Le Arti Tessili, the Award is open to young fiber artists under 35 coming from all over the world (in the previous nine editions more than 700 people have participated) and besides being an extraordinary international launch pad, it is one of the most important Italian events dedicated to fiber art, that has achieved during the years an important role in the worldwide art and is also an important promotion channel for the territory.

Born in 1995, designed as a creative and exhibition project around the textile medium, emphasises President Poggioli – during the years the Award became a choral journey, planned in all its stages, that has brought together different parties, artists and institutions, schools and academies, entrepreneurs and associations: a real pattern where its warp has been joined on its way by many other threads. A great involvement that requires an extensive work, thanks to the members of the association, starting from the creator of the Award, the artist Gina Morandini and the precious collaborator Lydia Predominato”.

This Tenth edition, started with the opening of the call on December 30, 2015, will end in December 2017 with the edition of the catalogue and the Exhibiton ot the 10th edition, that will count on a anthological part concerning the past editions and contributions written by important authors of the contemporary textile art world: an unpublished notice, witness of the evolution of fiber art.

In parallel and connected to the Award is also the school project, that aims to pass on the interest of contemporary textile art to young people of the secondary schools of the region, through theoretical meetings and workshops leaded by fiber art experts, teachers/relators. In particular, the meetings with l’Isis Zanussi in Pordenone and with Iis Torricelli in Maniago have ended recently, resulted also in the realisation of small tapestries with the loom: they will create a single structure, a value even if only symbolic, that will be exhibited in the rooms of the Palazzo d’Attimis together with the works of the Award. Furthermore, the students of the Third class C of the High School Liceo linguistico in Maniago, inside the training course of school/work alternation, will be actively involved, for the exhibition’s opening, in welcoming activities of the Italian and foreign guests and as guide to the exhibition path.
